Sponge bags
For short and long journeys: the toiletry bag is always with you!
Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, creams, nail set, shampoo, brush, comb, hair clips and, and, and... Everything can be stored safely and neatly in the toiletry bag and taken with us on long or short trips. But why do we love toiletry bags so much and what should you look out for when buying a new one?
The history of the toiletry bag goes back to the 19th century. People travelled more and it was necessary to take intimate toiletries, make-up utensils, tablets and personal items with them. Small toiletry bags, also known as wash bags, with an organised interior became popular and were also more practical than caskets or other containers in luggage. Toiletry bags were an expression of a traveller's "culture", i.e. their personal hygiene, grooming and appearance. In France, toiletry bags probably first appeared under the name "Necessaire", American soldiers used them by the millions during the Second World War, and in the 1950s the word "toiletry bag" found its way into a German dictionary for the first time.
Leather or plastic - the many variants of toiletry bags
The toiletry bag came to stay - and naturally evolved over the years. Compact, lightweight, waterproof and at the same time offering sufficient space, compartments and elasticated fastenings - these are the demands placed on a "practical" toiletry bag today. Materials such as plastics, nylon and other synthetic fabrics made the toiletry bag waterproof and made it easy to clean the inside, and more importantly: if something were to leak, nothing would leak into the suitcase or bag. Regardless of the triumph of synthetics, which are also the number 1 choice for
vegans - toiletry bags made of leather are still widely bought because they have a beautiful look and feel.
5 tips for your toiletry bag purchase
Tip from us bag experts: Before buying a toiletry bag, you should think about the five points below.
- Size and capacity: Think about how much space you need to store your toiletries. A toiletry bag that is too small is impractical, one that is too large takes up space. Many toiletries are available in travel sizes, so you don't have to calculate with the very large lotion bottle.
- Hanging hooks: Some toiletry bags have hooks or loops that you can use to hang up your bag. This is practical in small bathrooms and also prevents the toiletry bag from getting wet. (Unfortunately, this doesn't solve the problem that all hotel rooms don't have enough hanging space, does it?)
- Material: If you value a hard-wearing and easy-to-clean material, then choose a toiletry bag made of plastic. If you prefer a classic look, choose a leather toiletry bag.
- Regardless of the material, the inside of the toiletry bag should be waterproof in case a shampoo or shower gel leaks.
- Inner compartments and organisation: Look for a toiletry bag with different inner compartments and pockets to keep your toiletries organised.
